Mefloquine as a Preventive Treatment

Malaria is spread to humans when parasites are introduced through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Even with treatment malaria is a serious and potentially fatal illness. Prevention is the best defense against infection. Mefloquine works by killing any parasites that may enter the body.

While medications like mefloquine are tremendously helpful in preventing malaria infection, additional measures such as use of mosquito repellent, protective clothing and mosquito netting should also be employed whenever possible.

If traveling to a malaria zone, be sure to buy mefloquine well in advance of the trip; treatment should begin beforehand, both to prepare the body for exposure as well as to ensure there are no serious averse reactions to treatment. It may be difficult to buy mefloquine in some areas, especially on short notice; it is safest to have necessary supplies on hand from the start.

In otherwise healthy adults, treatment is straightforward:

• Adults weighing over 45 kg (99 lbs) should take 250 mg of mefloquine in each dose.
• One dose should be taken once per week, starting 1 to 3 weeks prior to entering a malaria zone.
• Continue taking one dose per week for the duration of the stay in a malaria zone.
• Continue taking one dose per week for 4 weeks after leaving a malaria zone.
• Tablets should be taken with food and plenty of liquid.
• Tablets may be crushed and dissolved in food or drink if desired.

Patients who are significantly overweight and children under 45 kg (99 lbs) may need adjusted doses which are best determined by a doctor.

Mefloquine as a Malaria Treatment

This product is used to treat mild to moderate malaria infections. In very severe cases alternative medications may be preferred or used in addition to mefloquine, and are usually administered via IV. Some species of malaria-causing parasites are more susceptible to certain medications than others; patients should not buy mefloquine to treat an undiagnosed condition, as it may not be the best treatment.

Administration is surprisingly simple:

• 1250 mg (five 250 mg tablets) are taken in a single dose.
• Nausea is a common side effect; if vomiting occurs within 30 minutes of administration, the full dose should be re-taken.
• If vomiting occurs 30 to 60 minutes after administration, a half-dose (625 mg or 2.5 tablets) should be taken.

Many patients notice improvements within 24 hours; it may take 48 to 72 hours for improvements to be significant. If there are no significant improvements after 72 hours alternative treatments should be considered.

Other Considerations

Some things to keep in mind to ensure treatment is trouble-free:

• Individuals who are allergic to quinine and quinidine are likely to be hypersensitive to mefloquine as well.
• Patients with a history of liver or heart issues, mental disorders, or seizures should not use this product.
• It should not be used while trying to become pregnant, during the first trimester of pregnancy, or while breast feeding.
• Mefloquine may produce complications when used with other medications; speak with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing treatments.

The most common side effects associated with this medication are nausea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach cramps, diarrhea, headache and dizziness. These symptoms are not cause for concern unless severe.
